UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2015/16 in Hong Kong

Hong Kong was delighted to be awarded to host a round of the World Cup on 16 and 17 January 2016 for the first time. The two previous rounds were held in Cali, Columbia and Cambridge, New Zealand. The final round of the World Cup was held in Hong Kong, where they gladly presented the trophy to the audience. World Cup is co-organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and The Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China Limited (CAHK). This UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Hong Kong was held at the Hong Kong Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O with the finale of the 2015/16 UCI Track Cycling World Cup as the largest track cycling competition ever staged in Hong Kong. The Velodrome, inaugurated in December 2013, has a 250-metre long wooden cycling track made according to the international standards, multi-purpose area and spectator stand that can accommodate an audience of 3,000.

Further, the World Cup hosted around 300 elite cyclists from all over the world from more than 38 countries in total. In addition, there were seven trade teams to contend for four Class 1 events and ten World Cup events.

In the Men´s Sprint Finals the battle was tight between Patrick Constable from Australia who won the gold medal and Chao Xu from China who was awarded silver. Bronze medal took Jason Obe Kenny from Great Britain. In team pursuit, Australian men were first, while the second and third place was taken by Denmark and Great Britain, respectively. Men´s Team Sprint category was won by Hindes, Kenny, and Skinner from Great Britain, while Polish Bielecki, Lipa, and Kuczynski were second. Bronze in this category was taken by Russian Yakushevskiy, Dmitriev, and Shurshin.

Further, Men´s Keirin category was particularly significant for Buchli from the Netherlands, Barrette from Canada, and Korean Chaebin Im. Scratch Race – Class 1, was won by French cyclist Benjamin Thomas, who was followed by Xavier Canellas Sanchez from Spain and Jordan Arley Parra Arias, while the Point Race- Class 1 also went to Thomas, who was here followed by another Spanish Julio Alberto Amores Palacios, and Like Mudgway from New Zealand.

Finally, Men´s Omnium gold medal went to the hands of French cyclist Thomas Boudat, while Lasse Norman Hansen from Denmark won the silver, and Artyom Zakharov won the bronze medal for Kazakhstan.

 

 

When it comes to women and Women´s Sprint category Chinese cyclist Lin Junhong showed the best results and won the gold. She was followed by Wal Sze Lee from Hong Kong and Anastasiia Voinova from Russia. Regarding Team Pursuit category the first place went to Canadians, second to British, and the third to the team from the USA. Team Sprint gold went to Anastasiia Voinova and Daria Shmeleva, who were followed by Jessica Varnish and Katy Marchant. Tania Calvo Barbero and her teammate Helena Casas Roige took the bronze.

Women´s Keirin category was won by Simona Krupeckaite from Lithuania. The second and third in this category were Stephanie Morton and Wai Sze Lee, who was especially emotional because she made the success with her family in the audience. Scratch Race – Class 1 in women´s category was important for Marina Shmayankova, Laura Trott, and Qianyu Yang, while the Point Race – Class 1 top three included Jolien D´Hoore, Jasmin Glaesser, and Emily Nelson.

Laura Trott won the Omnium with a total of 188 points to claim her second medal of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Hong Kong, while Sarah Hammer from the USA and Laurie Berthon from France followed her on the second and third place.
